The Black

The Black is an award-winning Texas strain and the cornerstone of the Deep Ellum label. She was created by Dr. Dank in 2005. Her iconic midnight coloration and strong high have helped make The Black a beloved strain the world over. She is named for her beautifully dark appearance and also because of her “black market” heritage; The Black is comprised of some of our family’s oldest lines: Michoacán and Oaxaca that our forefathers acquired in 1965, and Vietnamese and Afghani that they brought to America in 1970 and 71, respectivly. Dr. Dank began his work on The Black in 2005, she was stabilized by 2007 and the first Black seeds were distributed in 2008. A few months later, The Black was named a Top Ten Strain of the Year by High Times. Years of methodical hybridization and careful selection mean that although The Black’s ancestry is 3/4th's sativa, she is a medium-height plant that grows more like a stout indica. This makes her ideally suited for an indoor environment where space and height may be limited. Her branching is easy to control and she performs well in both sea of green setups and in gardens with longer vegetative cycles. She yields well (350+ grams per square metre), finishes in 8-9 weeks and has a uniquely sweet, ancient flavour. The Black’s strong effects have been anecdotally shown to help to increase appetite, assist with pain management and aid in counteracting insomnia.
