Indica / Sativa — retail shopping guide

Indica 50%Sativa 50%

Indica, sativa and hybrid are a retail shopping convention — not a reliable guide to genetics or effects. When researchers analysed 89,923 commercial samples across six states, these labels did not predict a plant’s terpene or cannabinoid profile, and a genome-wide study found sativa- and indica-labelled plants to be genetically indistinct (PLOS ONE 2022; Nature Plants 2021). The labels are so fluid that AK-47, a hybrid, won “Best Sativa” at the 1999 Cannabis Cup and “Best Indica” four years later. For an accurate, genetics-true picture, see the chemotype above.

About Durban x C99

We inherited this elite female Durban clone from a group of underground growers last year and proceeded to flower a bunch of them for research. We were blown away by the aromas given off by the flowers – pure black licorice. Also impressive was the plant’s sturdy structure and minimal stretch during flowering – clearly not a Sativa-dominant morphology. After 75 days of flowering, we harvested loads of intoxicatingly fragrant, uber-dense flowers, with resin glands sparkling like crushed diamonds sprinkled all over them. And even a short clone of only 18 inches, yielded over an ounce of primo dried buds. Naturally we wanted to see what would happen if we crossed this Durban and our Cinderella 99. Our results shocked us a bit because of the increased size of the hybrid plants, and their phenomenal growth rate. This is a classic example of hybrid vigor affecting the offspring. These plants grow big, long “donkey-dick” colas that produce stony, terpene-rich, resin-encrusted buds that will impress even the fussiest connoisseur. As is often the case when C99 is used to hybridize another strain – the flowering time is reduced and the flavors/aromas shift to a more fruity/floral effect. The
