Indica / Sativa — retail shopping guide

Indica 70%Sativa 30%

Indica, sativa and hybrid are a retail shopping convention — not a reliable guide to genetics or effects. When researchers analysed 89,923 commercial samples across six states, these labels did not predict a plant’s terpene or cannabinoid profile, and a genome-wide study found sativa- and indica-labelled plants to be genetically indistinct (PLOS ONE 2022; Nature Plants 2021). The labels are so fluid that AK-47, a hybrid, won “Best Sativa” at the 1999 Cannabis Cup and “Best Indica” four years later. For an accurate, genetics-true picture, see the chemotype above.

About Hopar Valley

Genetics: Karakoram Cannabis Landrace Sourcing: Landrace Genetics, Hopar Valley, Karakoram Range, 2022 Harvest Purpose: Charas (sieved resin), Seed (culinary), Bhang (coarse flower and leaf) Latitude: 36° N Harvest: late-September through October Height: 1 – 4 meters Aroma: Earthy spice, sweet funk, rotten roadkill Characteristics: Mostly broad leaflet, resinous, frequent purple / black colouration, large plants and buds Classification: C. sativa subsp. indica var. afghanica Grow Type: Outdoors, greenhouse, or indoors An Indica-type cannabis landrace cultivated in upper Hopar Valley in the Karakoram region of northern Pakistan, which borders Kashmir, Xinjiang, and the Hindu Kush. Large plants that are likely to reach heights of beyond two meters in good land, these don’t fit neatly into the Indica-type / Sativa-type taxonomy of McPartland and Small, perhaps because they are from near the frontier or interface between Central and South Asian cannabis, i.e. are Indica–Sativa hybrids. Aromas range from earthy spice, to sweet funk and rotten roadkill, so are mostly Indica-type. Purple coloration was exhibited by many plants at the time of collection. Essential to collectors interested
