Chemotype — the cannabinoid and terpene profile — is the lab-verifiable signal that stays true to a cultivar’s genetics, which is why scientists classify cannabis by chemical profile (a “chemovar”) rather than by name (Hazekamp & Fischedick 2012). Cannabinoid type is set largely by a single gene (the THC:CBD ratio); about 96% of commercial flower is Type I, THC-dominant. Terpene profiles are sourced from Certificates of Analysis (COA) and roll out as Areto’s lab-verified data comes online.

Indica / Sativa — retail shopping guide

Indica 100%

Indica, sativa and hybrid are a retail shopping convention — not a reliable guide to genetics or effects. When researchers analysed 89,923 commercial samples across six states, these labels did not predict a plant’s terpene or cannabinoid profile, and a genome-wide study found sativa- and indica-labelled plants to be genetically indistinct (PLOS ONE 2022; Nature Plants 2021). The labels are so fluid that AK-47, a hybrid, won “Best Sativa” at the 1999 Cannabis Cup and “Best Indica” four years later. For an accurate, genetics-true picture, see the chemotype above.

About Kandahar

This pure indica comes from the Andarab district in Kandahar in the south of the country, where it is very hot and dry. The plants grow very large and fat, they smell intensely of musk interspersed with oily and earthy scents, overall the odour is like woody coffee with hints of ripe apples and blueberries. In contrast to the always fruity and nutty terpene profiles that are more common in the north of the country, this indica from Kandahar is rather spicy and only slightly fruity. Kandahar is best suited for outdoors, indoors and especially for greenhouses, where it delivers the best results. Kandahar is also known and famous for the production of "black hashish", this hashish is still produced by the tonne every year. The genetics of this landrace ensure that the plants grow bushy and have dark, broad leaves that are usually significantly shorter and denser than most Afghani landraces
