Indica / Sativa — retail shopping guide
Indica 50%Sativa 50%
Indica, sativa and hybrid are a retail shopping convention — not a reliable guide to genetics or effects. When researchers analysed 89,923 commercial samples across six states, these labels did not predict a plant’s terpene or cannabinoid profile, and a genome-wide study found sativa- and indica-labelled plants to be genetically indistinct (PLOS ONE 2022; Nature Plants 2021). The labels are so fluid that AK-47, a hybrid, won “Best Sativa” at the 1999 Cannabis Cup and “Best Indica” four years later. For an accurate, genetics-true picture, see the chemotype above.

About Pina Acai
If indica and sativa are like ESPN and ESPN2, hybrid strains are The Ocho: anything goes! Growers mix and match chill-inducing indica and energy-producing sativa strains to achieve certain effects, which means there’s a vast range of cannabis experiences within the hybrid category. Most flower on the market is some kind of hybrid, including legendary strains like Girl Scout Cookies, Gelato, Gorilla Glue and Pineapple Express. Keep an eye out for whether a hybrid is labeled sativa- or indica-dominant as an indicator for what its effects may be
