Before All the named cuts of “Diesel, ECSD, AJ, etc.”, there were only a few names in circulation related to “Diesel”, around 2003, that I was aware of. There was Sour Diesel, Original Diesel, and “Chem”… Not much else was known. I received clones of many named and similar “diesel” plants over the last 15+ years. But the one that always stuck in my personal garden and always seemed to be the “best”, in side by side comparisons of diesels, was the “Original Diesel” I received from forum user, Schrooomy. It was always the skunkiest, most fume-y, smoothest tasting waxy diesel in the room. For flavor and true diesel form, it was always #1 for me. In an effort to bring down the flower time and just take a peek into the possibilities, we made Original Diesel x Zkittles feminized hybrid and grew those out. To be honest, that hybrid was all over the place. Some were pure diesel. Some, a weird fruity thing with weak resin, but one out of the 20 stood out to me. With an intense blossoming honeysuckle diesel smell and bright orange pistils, she seemed a little nothing like either parent, but obviously had traits of both. Something I thought would be fun to breed and play with. And that’s exactly what I did. Some of the older strains have such dominant traits compared to today’s varieties, that hybrids with them, in my experience, yield a “one step forward, two steps back” kind of result. Diesel has been one of those type plants for me. Whether BX’d or Filial, When I select for diesel traits, I almost always get the longer flowering time and other less desirable diesel traits coming along with it. So, I like going a generation or two past the original parent, while maintaining as much of the desirable traits through selection, as possible.
